Mendlingtal Valley - Walkings on wooden paths
Go "on the path of wood" and explore the last functioning wood drifting facility in Central Europe.
History meets nature: Those who hike through the Mendlingtal world of experience in Göstling an der Ybbs will follow the theme of the Holzweg. Immerse yourself in the wonderful world of cool, clear water and fresh air far away from the stress of everyday life.
Around 1550, the Eisenwurzen region (“Iron Root” region) was the most important iron producing area in Europe. The Mendlingtal Valley is located along the Lower Austrian “Eisenstraße” (“Iron Trail”) and takes visitors on a journey to the time of hammer lords, blacksmith journeymen and wood-cutters.
The valley is three and a half kilometres long and can be comfortably explored on various walks, bridges and forest tracks leading through canyons and idyllic lowland forests. Starting point is the village pond in Lassing. From there, it is not far to the “Schmiedegesellenhaus” (blacksmith journeymen's hostel) with “Rauchkuchl” (smokehouse) complete with photo documentation and to the Venetian timber saw. The operative timber rafting plant is the centrepiece of the theme park. The Großegger mill, manor house fishponds, a café, a playground, and an organic shop complete the programme.
