On a contemplative path: The Mariazellerweg, an Upper Austrian pilgrimage trail
Lunz am See and Lackenhof am Ötscher are stage stops on the Mariazellerweg in Upper Austria.
Following the Mariazellerweg pilgrimage trail in Upper Austria, pilgrims encounter beautiful natural and cultivated landscapes on their way between Linz and Mariazell. About half of the pilgrimage trail leads through Upper Austria and the Mostviertel region.
A multitude of pilgrimage trails lead to Mariazell in a star-like manner. Mariazell is home to the statue of grace "Magna Mater Austria" and the most important pilgrimage site in Central Europe. The Upper Austrian Mariazellerweg coming from the west meanders from Linz through the Mostviertel to the place of mercy.
Two routes
Starting point of the Upper Austrian Mariazellerweg is the pilgrimage church on Pöstlingberg mountain near Linz. Once you have reached the St. Florian monastery, the route takes you south either via the city of Steyr, home to the pilgrimage church Christkindl, or via the monastery in Seitenstetten and the Sonntagberg basilica. In Ybbsitz, the two paths meet again. Depending on the route you choose, the pilgrim trail is either 146 or 158 kilometres long and takes 7 to 8 days.
Some stages lead through Ybbsitz, Waidhofen/Ybbs, Lunz am See and Lackenhof am Ötscher and thus right through the Ybbstal Alps. Depending on the chosen route, stages 4 and 5 lead through Waidhofen/Ybbs and Ybbsitz, and stages 5 and 6 lead to Lunz am See and on to Lackenhof.
