Wallfahrtskirche Maria Seesal

Church

Description

The Lower Austrian pilgrimage church of Maria Seesal welcomes its visitors - as a pilgrimage destination with a view.

Legendary origins and a simple yet remarkable interior characterize Maria Seesal. As a historical monument of art, it offers its guests many things worth seeing. From its position on a wooded group of hills in front of the narrowing of the Schwarze Ois valley, the church looks down on the Schwarzois settlement in Ybbsitz. Thanks to its idyllic location away from busy roads, it is now popular for pilgrimages and weddings.

Its origins are characterized by a particularly beautiful story: When a certain Helene Wochner dreamed of a church with a picture of the Virgin Mary in 1863, she found this picture in a mill - and erected it on a slope. As a result, a wooden chapel was first built here. Around ten years later, this was replaced by a small neo-baroque chapel made of stone. Finally, it was the descendants of the aforementioned Helena Wochner who built an inn to revitalize the pilgrimage - and initiated the construction of today's Maria Seesal pilgrimage church. It was completed in 1906.

Architecturally, the simple late historic hall church has a double-tower façade and a three-bay hall. The high altar dates back to 1740 - and was transferred from the Sonntagberg Basilica as a former side altar. Also worth seeing are the chandeliers and figures of saints from Gresten, beautifully carved pews, elaborate stained glass and the organ from 1984.
